When your air conditioner breaks down, what do you do with it? Are you supposed to throw it away? Recycle it? Read on to learn what you can and cannot do when disposing of an old air conditioning unit.
The Environmental Protection Agency
Cooling refrigerants are a universal feature of air conditioners, regardless of the model. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) is commonly found in many air conditioning units and dehumidifiers. This is an ozone-depleting substance that, if released, can degrade the ozone layer and be harmful to the environment.
What does this mean when you are trying to dispose of your air conditioning unit? It is illegal to throw the AC unit away in the trash or at a dump yard.
Recycling Your Air Conditioner
If your old window air conditioner still works but you no longer need it, consider donating it to a nonprofit group. If it’s a 501(c)3 organization, you may be eligible for a tax write-off.
If the unit no longer works, you can disassemble it and donate salvageable parts. Metal and plastic unit parts are typically the most reusable.
Illinois State Laws
According to the Illinois Environmental Agency, you can only dispose of your old air conditioner in specific places. They must be landfills that participate in the Industrial Material Exchange Service. Check that the facility has proper licensing and an operating plan that adheres to EPA guidelines.
Energy Company Pickups
Many energy companies will pick up and properly dispose of your old air conditioning unit for you. In some cases, you may even be eligible to receive a rebate! Contact your electric or gas company for more information.
