FAQs About Geothermal Heating

Published by Luke Weiden

What is Geothermal heating?

Geothermal systems use the energy from underneath the ground surface as a source of heating and cooling. Because the temperature underneath the ground is constantly about 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, this allows for more efficient heating and cooling in Lincoln Park. Geothermal systems utilize the constant underground temperatures through installing a piping system, commonly referred to as a “loop.”

How is Geothermal heating different?

In comparison to ordinary heating and cooling systems, Geothermal heating and cooling is quicker and more environmentally friendly. Since the air temperature is constantly changing, ordinary systems make take more time to make changes to heating and cooling. For instance, when you need warmth the most, the air outside is the coldest and this will take time to heat up to a comfortable, indoor temperature. Conventional systems also utilize burning fossil fuels, such as gas or propane, for heating and cooling, but geothermal systems only transfers energy to and from the earth.

What does the installation process look like?

The Geothermal system is installed into the ground connecting the interior of the home to the underground areas in your yard. The process of inserting this heating and cooling system in Lincoln Park will take approximately 2 to 3 days for the interior installation in addition to 2 to 4 days for the exterior section, unless the whole house needs ductwork installed. If the house needs a full installation of ductwork, this process may take between 2 to 3 weeks. Once fully installed, the geothermal systems require very little maintenance.
